Already facing much uproar regarding the meat ban in Maharashtra, government has come up with a new ‘development’ for the education sector.
Ministries of Culture and HRD are currently working on to implement Ramayana, Mahabharata and Gita in schools and colleges curriculum.
Reason?
To rid the country of ‘cultural pollution’ and inculcate ‘values’ among young minds. Mahesh Sharma (Minister of State for Culture) said that the government will not be deterred because of the consequent criticism on the grounds that it is promoting RSS ideology.
Apparently, the government is determined to restore cultural heritage. (restore?)
He further added, ”We want to bring it as part of our culture that they (students) should be taught values, they should be taught teachings of Mahabharata, teachings of Ramayana, they should be taught teachings of Gita and all other spritual values irrespective of caste, creed and religion.”
Maybe CBSE will incorporate these changes.
The Minister of Culture said, ”There has been a discussion on this issue in what best manner it can be done.”
Mahesh Sharma also supported the RSS ideology. He said, ”What is RSS ideology, is it anti-national? Has any of the heads of RSS been anti-national? Are they extremists? What has been wrong about the RSS ideology? I have been with RSS for last 40 years. They never talk of anti-national things.”
Here’s our humble opinion and some questions regarding this change:
1. If Gita, the religious book of Hindus, teaches us ‘values’, then why not incorporate Quran and Bible in the curriculum too considering that our country is the secular one?
2. Why impose such teachings on a child and constrain their thinking? Let them develop their own opinions at this age. Aren’t we free individuals who can think for ourselves and judge what culture suits us instead of haranguing us to such an extent?
3. Also what does getting rid of the cultural pollution actually mean? Have we no respect for other cultures and religions? Why are we forced to mould our thinking according to them?
