The story 10 Facts About 26/11 Martyr Ashok Kamte That You Should Know appeared first on StoryPick.

When the nation was under attack on 26/11/2008, a few brave men were in the forefront, trying to fend off the the most horrific terrorist irruption in India in the recent history. Ashok Kamte was one of those few good men who martyred for the country that day. He was 42 years old, survived by his wife Vinita and sons, Arjun and Rahul. On 26th January, 2009, Kamte was honored with the Ashoka Chakra.

Today, on his birthday, we bring to you a peek into his life, the story of his heroism and some facts that were never really was brought much into attention.

1. Born into a family of cops

Kamte, born on February 23, 1965, belonged to a family with a long line of police officers. With Khakee as a shade of his blood, Kamte was almost pre-destined to serve the nation as a police officer. An accomplished athlete, Kamte had even represented India at the junior power-lifting championship in Peru, 1978.

2. A cop of principles

Kamte made it to the headlines in 2007 when he arrested Ravikant Patil in Solapur. He was three time Member of the Legislative Assembly and his brother was a Shiva Sena leader but that didn’t let Kamte back down. “Law is equal for all and nobody has the right to violate it”, Kamte would say.

3. A cop well known

During the frequent communal violence of Mumbai, areas under the supervision of Kamte mostly remained free or trouble. Often compared to Bollywood heroes, Kamte was well known, popular and respected. More than 3000 people came to pay their respects on the day Kamte was cremated.

4. Kamte was needed on 26/11

Kamte who was appreciated for dealing with hardened criminals and politicians was also known for his excellent skills in negotiation and crisis management. When the city faced the perilous encroachment, Kamte’s services were required without question and so, he was summoned on 26/11.

5. The fatal bullet

After a valiant fight, Kamte was finally hit in the head by Ismail Khan’s bullet who fired a volley of shots. It all took place in a narrow lane between Rang Bhavan and Kamte’s Alma mater, St. Xavier’s College, just a couple of minutes from the Crime Branch Office.

6. It was Kamte’s plan to attack from the gate of Cama Hospital

Kamte, upon reaching the site, armed with AK47, fired at the terrorists and they responded with hand grenades. It is then that Kamte suggested to attack them from the front gate of the Cama Hospital but the terrorists already escaped from the front gate before the plan could be executed.

7. Kamte’s plan failed due to lack of back up

His, wife, Vinita Kamte has written in her book, that although reports say that Kamte and Hemant Karkare were together from the beginning, they weren’t in reality. Karkare had reached the site on his own and had radioed the central room, asking for back up to encircle the Cama Hospital. However, the back up was not sent on time.

8. When Kamte, Karkare and Salaskar finally got together

They approached the Rangbhavan lane at around 12:01 am, spotted the terrorists and fired at them. Kamte got out of the vehicle and fired with his AK47. He hit Ajmal Kasab but was hit by a fatal bullet of Ismail. Kamte and Karkare died on the spot, while Kasab and Salaskar were severely injured.

9. Kamte could have been saved

The terrorist took them out of the vehicle, threw them on the street and left off with the police vehicle. Apparently, Kamte was left bleeding to die from 12.04 am to 12.49 am. Vinita raised the question in her book that why were they left on the street for 40 minutes when the police headquarters were only a couple of minutes away from the spot.

10. An honorable cremation

A martyr, Kamte was cremated the next day at the Vaikunth Crematorium. Many officers of high rank were present in the funeral procession joined by 3000 of Kamte’s followers, admirers and well wishers.

It’s been almost 8 years since the ghastly incident but the courageous sacrifice of Additional Police Commissioner, Ashok Kamte will be remembered forever.

Here Is Why You Shouldn’t Wash Your Face In The Shower

The story Here Is Why You Shouldn’t Wash Your Face In The Shower appeared first on StoryPick.

Every one of us is a creature of habit. Time is of the essence when we’re up in the morning, and we want to get done as much as possible in the limited time we have on our hands. So what do we do? Pee + brush teeth + bathe in the shower. All at the same time. Hey! No judgement, I do it too!

Then comes the face washing. But science says that you shouldn’t wash your face while in the shower. Why, you may ask? Read on.

You can never set a perfect temperature for your shower.

Arctic Blast or Satan’s Piss. Our showers deal in absolutes and there is no middle ground. In the times of such hardships, experts say that constantly changing temperature variations can harm the sensitive skin on your body. Leading dermatologists suggest splashing cold water for washing your face, and to do it at the sink, since you wouldn’t like cold water for the entire body shower.

Fact source

Hot water for body = Good! Hot water for face = Bad!

Studies have shown that since the skin on our faces is different and more sensitive than that on our bodies, it may not take to hot water well. Hot water on your face might give you comfort and open up your pores for better cleansing, but it leaves your face dehydrated and dry for the rest of the day. Also, if you suffer from redness, hot water also dilates your blood vessels and capillaries, which might lead to your facial skin to appear patchy.

Fact source

Body soap is for the body, literally. Not for the face.

Bar soap, or the ones which we usually use to clean our bodies, is too drying and our facial skin cannot handle it. It screws up the pH balance of the skin and can lead to breakouts, dehydration, and constant irritation during the day. The delicate skin of your face is designed to handle more gentler products and chemicals, hence the advent of face washes.

Fact source

Mixing of different products may also spell disaster for your skin.

When you are washing your hair with shampoo and/or conditioner, the products slide down your face and often mix with your facial cleanser. Nothing can be worse than different kinds of soap and chemicals and residue of your dirty hair attacking your face all at once. Excess soap can rob your skin of its natural oils and can either lead to a reaction or dry skin for a long time. Keep your face washing to the sink, seriously.

Fact source

That towel you use for your entire body, don’t use it for your face.

If you used hot water to clean your face with your shower, then do your face a favour and don’t use your body towel for your face too. Chances are, the bacteria might spread to your face and settle in the pores, and well, that won’t go well for your face. Use a paper towel instead and dab your face with it for cleaning. Any kind of scrubbing or violent cleaning is bad for your facial skin. Don’t do it.

Fact source

Too much water + extra pressure of the shower = Dehydrated skin.

Washing your face in the shower means that the water will be coming at your face first, and the most. This means that the force will be borne by your face and also that your face will have water on it throughout the shower. Ironically, the more the water on your face, the more dehydrated your face will become, according to leading dermatologists. Hence, just a few splashes of handfuls of cold water for your face is all you need.

Fact source

1 in every 32 people in the world suffer from dry skin and studies say that the number is increasing because of bad facial health practices. So care for your face and use the right products and employ the perfect routines for cleansing.

After all, your face is the very first thing the world notices about you.
Stay clean, stay sharp!

11 Situations In Life When You Should Let The Experts Take Over

The story 11 Situations In Life When You Should Let The Experts Take Over appeared first on StoryPick.

Have you ever been in one of those situations where you try to handle everything that is going on all by yourself, and then you realize it is practically not possible to do so? Sometimes, we think we don’t need help to do tasks like packing & moving or cooking for a party, but we fail to understand that it requires a particular set of skills to do those seemingly simple tasks perfectly.

Here are few situations in life, where we should let experts take charge. Because if plans fail, we will have no one to turn to (since we decided to do it all alone).

1. When you need good makeup but you are not good at it

Getting ready for a photoshoot, formal event, performance or a big wedding can be tricky if you don’t know how to do good makeup. Going natural is always an option, but if you do need to put good make-up, hire a good beautician. Big and important events are not a good time to experiment.

2. Packing & moving while changing houses

As easy as packing sounds, it’s really difficult when you are changing houses. Because everyone is not a born Monica Geller, contact good packers and movers. Your stuff will be well organised and it will ease up your unpacking process as well.

3. When you decide to start practicing yoga or aerobics

Practicing yoga or exercising is one of the best and most liberating things you can do. But, it can be tremendously harmful if you don’t do it properly. So, consulting a professional trainer will save you from all those back aches which are completely uncalled for.

4. For getting rid of the pests living in your house

Sprinkling flour on lizards and salt on cockroaches is not the solution. Hire a pest control to make your house clean and disease free.

5. For fixing AC, fridge or any other electrical appliance

You might think you can do it, but it can end up in a broken appliance or you getting badly shocked. Either way, calling an electrician is a better idea.

6. For subjects and specializations, you fail to understand

If you have a subject in your school/college with which you are having some trouble, taking good coaching classes is not a bad option. It will break things down for you and might make you see things you tend to skip in crowded classes.

7. Changing and fixing gas connections

If this goes wrong, it can lead to severe damages. Always call for a professional when it comes to problems in gas connection.

8. For all the broken tiles and leaking roofs

The temporary seal is not going to last long. Call for skilled help to get done with the problem once and for all.

9. When your pets fall ill

Taking them to a veterinarian should be the first and the only option. Please, oh please don’t try home remedies on them. You know nothing about how their body works and doing anything might backfire badly.

10. For catering a party

Indians take their cooking very seriously. If there is a party for 20 people, they’ll take it on their ego to cook for all of them. Well, the whole party can blow off if things fall apart. Hire a caterer, and relax! Enjoy the party.

11. Basically, anytime and everytime you need any sort of help

Sometimes jugads don’t work. What you need to do is just log on to Sulekha.com or download their app and find professionals for over 800 home care services with no hassle. Go #AntiJugaad.

Until next time… :)

7 Reasons Why The Concept Of IQ Test Is Flawed

The story 7 Reasons Why The Concept Of IQ Test Is Flawed appeared first on StoryPick.

This is not to take away the credit of those who score high on the test and neither is it to console  those who don’t. It is just a collection of  arguments that claim an IQ test can be misleading because it fails to reflect one’s intelligence accurately.

What are the arguments against the most commonly accepted method of measuring a person’s intelligence? Let’s find them out.

1. Criticism by Prof. Stephen Jay Gould of Harvard

Stephen Jay Gould, an evolutionary biologist, paleontologist, and a historian of science, had spent a considerable amount of time as a professor at Harvard, denied the accuracy of IQ test in his book, The Mismeasure of Man (1981). According to the arguments put forward by Gould, the human intelligence is not just a single entity which could be measured in terms of mathematical number or be graded according to score.

2. Various factors may affect the performance in the test

An IQ test measures the intelligence of a person based on the result of the performance of the person on a particular day. The very next, the person may not perform well and there could be various reasons behind it such as emotional or health conditions or even the atmosphere of the test room.

Also, a person who is not educated will not be able to take the test the same way as an educated person.

3. There is no such thing as a fixed IQ – the thing about Flynn Effect

Even if the results of an IQ test are considered as a means to measure a person’s intelligence, the IQ may not remain the same throughout his life. With some practice, the same person who has scored poorly now can score really well the next time he or she appears for the test.

However, the “standardized score” does consider the expected amount of improvement over time and discounts it in the next attempt.

4. Predicting the success of person on the basis of the IQ Test

Several institutions use the IQ test as a tool to gauge the capabilities of a student and how he or she is going to do later in life. However, in reality, an IQ test is not a very good indicator of vocational and socioeconomic success.

5. The subjects are not enough to measure one’s intelligence

According to The University of South Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Studies, IQ tests fails to include many subjects which are crucial aspects of intelligence in a human being.

While subjects like mathematicians, comprehension, series and limits are important, an individual’s intelligence depends largely on creativity, social skills, and mechanics which are not included in the test.

6. It is detrimental to one’s growth

Not only is the test based on arbitrary standards, but representing the entire magnitude of a person’s intelligence into just a number is too simplistic. In many cases, assigning a number to a person’s intelligence can limit his or her aspirations.

7. The role of cultural bias

Apparently, the IQ test is designed in a manner that  emphasizes on skills that are important to certain societies. For instance, Australian Aboriginal children, raised in the deserts scored well on a test meant to assess visual memory but not in the IQ test.

Visual memory is more important for these people than anything else as they need to find their ways through the desert.

The intelligence quotient test is based on arbitrary standards set by man and is not written in stone.

Confessions Of An Agnostic Child Of Religious Parents

The story Confessions Of An Agnostic Child Of Religious Parents appeared first on StoryPick.

agnostic (n.) from Google
A person who believes that nothing is known or can be known of the existence or nature of God.

I was born and raised in a pious and religious family. Praying every night before sleeping, every morning after waking up; visiting the temple on a regular basis; observing the religious practices and festivals; all of this was a common sight in my household. My mother used to tell me stories of the Gods and their great works, my grandmother used to explain the importance of religion to me. It was a very immersive experience.

The sheer number of it all scared me.

But as I grew up, I started feeling a little bit restrained, restricted. I was at odds as to why I’m feeling this way, and that I shouldn’t, because, well, religion is good, right? But so many Gods, so many religions, so many practices, so many do’s and don’t’s, it’s some serious work keeping everything in check and living every day without committing a sin.

There is very little or no logic in religious beliefs.

Blind faith is rampant in India. No shaving or getting a haircut on Saturday because x God will be offended. Menstruating women can’t enter a temple because they’re unclean. Don’t eat underground vegetables for eight days because you’re atoning for your sins. All of this doesn’t make sense if you stop and think about it practically. Logically, religion fails.

My mother was very open about it all and that calmed me.

My mother was always a proponent of inner belief and spirituality. She saw my reasoning and understood my doubts. Gaining strength from her, I started drawing out from religion and stopped following it so much. I was on my way to agnosticism. Different religions preached different things, different Gods taught often opposite and confusing ideas, and I wanted to be away from the jumble.

The universe is the ultimate power and religion is for man.

I once read a famous philosopher’s quote that “God made man and man made religion.” I couldn’t have agreed more to that. Man made religion to keep himself in check. But it soon turned on him. Strong sentiments and blind faith led man to do things he designed religion to stop him from doing in the first place. I don’t need to stress on all the events that have happened in our country as well as the world which stemmed with religion at the crux.

Becoming agnostic and finding the one true God.

I came to a conclusion that what you believe is what will happen to you. Karma is real and that is the only absolute truth in the world. Movies like Oh My God and PK only strengthened my resolve. There is only one true superior power in the universe, and it keeps everything in check and in balance. It’s the brilliant, and at the same time, vicious circle of life.

Khaled Hosseini wrote in his brilliant debut novel, The Kite Runner, the following words:

“No matter what the leaders teach, there is only one sin, only one. And that is theft. Every other sin is a variation of theft. When you kill a man, you steal a life. You steal his wife’s right to a husband, rob his children of a father. When you tell a lie, you steal someone’s right to the truth. When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness. There is no act more wretched than stealing, Amir. A man who takes what’s not his to take, be it a life or a naan… I spit on such a man. If there’s a God out there, then I would hope he has more important things to attend to than my drinking scotch or eating pork.”

I am agnostic. But I still pray at night, because sending out positive vibrations in this universe will only add to the collective good Karma.
I don’t believe in Gods and religions. But I believe there is one power which runs the existence of everything.
I am not against people who are religious. Belief is a virtue of the strong and I respect them for their faiths.

I rest my case.

The story 10 Indian Nuclear Scientists Who Died Rather Mysteriously appeared first on StoryPick.

Between 2009 to 2013, 11 Indian nuclear scientists have died unnaturally. Some had died in blasts, some drowned while some had taken their own lives. Interestingly, the mysterious deaths of Indian nuclear scientists is not a recent phenomenon. Homi Bhabha, the father of Indian Nuclear Program, had died under questionable circumstances in 1966 and some even claim it was the CIA responsible for this death.

It is claimed by some that the breakthroughs reached by some scientists may have posed a threat to the Indo-US Nuclear Deal and that’s probably why the scientists were done away with. However, these could be mere speculations and are not proven yet. What remains factual is the strange deaths of some of the most talented nuclear scientists of the country. Let’s check them out.

1. Homi Jhangir Bhabha

Homi Jhangir Bhabha, met his end in a plane crash, shortly after his announcement that India could produce its own nuclear device in a short time. However, on his way to Vienna, the Air India Flight 101 crashed near Mont Blanc, on January 24, 1966. It was not before 2012, that a bag belonging to an Indian diplomat was found near the crash site.

Apparently, the bag did not contain any important documents. Journalist, Robert Crowley, claims the involvement of the CIA in the crash who were apparently threatened by the possibilities of India’s progression in nuclear capabilities.

2. Lokanathan Mahalingam

In June 2008, the nuclear scientist, working at the Kaiga atomic power station in Karnataka, apparently went out for a morning walk and never returned. His body was found five days later. While the incident was not quite covered by the Indian media, some serious questions were thrown from a newspaper of Pakistan called the Islamabad’s South Asian Strategic Stability Institute.

The article claimed that Mahalingam was training scientists with nuclear reactor simulator. Why the scientist’s body was cremated before the DNA tests were released was one of the many questions raised along with claims that Mahalingam’s employee, Ravi Mule was also murdered a few weeks before him.

3. M Padmanabhan Iyer

Iyer was an engineer at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center who was found dead at his residence on February 23, 2010. Finding no fingerprints or clues at crime scene, the forensics declared the cause of death “unexplained” and the investigations came to a standstill as well. However, the police did try to explain the death as a cause of unnatural sex, tried by Iyer before his death.

Apparently, Iyer was homosexual and the police visited many gay parties for evidence but failed. Eventually, the case was closed in 2012. M Padmanabhan Iyer was 48 years old when he died and he was a senior researcher at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center.

4. Uma Rao

She was 63 and already a retired scientist at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. Apparently, she had taken her life not being to bear the chronic depression she was suffering from. She also had left a suicide note that said she did not blame anyone for the “extreme step” she has taken.

Her colleagues, however, did not agree that Uma Rao ever showed any signs of depressions or suicidal tendencies for that matter. Her body was found at her residence in 2011 and although, the cause of the death was said to be suicide, Uma Rao’s family contested the verdict.

5. Umang Singh and Partha Pratim Bag

They were a couple of young nuclear researchers at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center and both were burnt to death in a mysterious fire. Their bodies were bound on December 30, 2009 in the radiation and photochemistry laboratory of the BARC. Interestingly, forensic reports said there was nothing the room that was inflammable which indicated foul play in the case.

The researchers were in their late twenties and their subject of research was free radical reactions, antioxidant studies of plant extracts. Their families are still in dark about the cause of their deaths, especially after Department of Atomic Energy stated no involvement of radiation of radioactive reactor in the fire.

6. Mohammad Mustafa

Mohammad Mustafa, was a scientist at the Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam. He was only 24 years old when his body was found inside his quarters at Kalpakkam in 2012. Apparently, the young scientist had slashed his own wrist. IANS reports have mentioned that although a death note, apparently written by Mustafa was found by the police, there was no reason for suicide written in it.

Mustafa had joined only a year back and it has been only a couple of months since he was a confirmed employee at the IGCAR. He was believed to be mentally stable and did not have much pressure at work either.

7. Titus Pal

Titus Pal, who worked at the BARC, was 27 year old when she was found dead in Trombay. She was found hanging from the ventilators at her campus residence of BARC. Her father told the police that Titus was perfectly fine when she left Kolkata for Mumbai and resumed work at the BARC at around 10 a.m on March 3.

Titus, apparently committed suicide on the very same evening and it was only three days after her birthday which she had celebrated with her family and friends in Kolkata. Pal’s suspicious and apparent suicide is yet another case of unsolved deaths of nuclear scientists in India in the recent years.

8. Dalia Nayek

Dalia Nayek was a senior researcher at the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics. In 2009, she had allegedly consumed mercuric chloride and died at the hospital the next day. Dalia, who was 35 and working as an associate professor at the chemistry department was rushed to the hospital by her neighbors after they heard her scream.

Although police had suspected that Dalia was depressed and suicidal, her colleagues remembered her as “fun loving” and efficient. Dalia, who was single and lived on her own, joined SINP in 2005 as a chemist scientist but was researching on radio-active materials prior to her death.

9. Tirumala Prasad Tenka

Tirumala Prasas Tenka was a 30 year old scientist, working at Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology, who allegedly took his own life in 2010. According to the police, Tirumala had also left a note mentioning the reason of his suicide being “mentally tortured by his senior”. Police found him hanging at his residence at Rajendra Nagar, Indore.

The police had mentioned that Tenka had committed suicide about three days before the body was finally found hanging by his domestic help. His senior, G.S Lodha, was held responsible for the mental torture according to his note.

10. Abish Shivam

Abish Shivam was a 33 year old engineer working at INS Airhant, the first ever nuclear-powered submarine of India. However, his body, along with another one belonging to KK Josh, a chief engine room artificer at Shipbuilding Center, was found at the railway tracks near Pendurty railway station, Vishakapatnam.

Both were poisoned first and then dragged and left to the tracks so that it looked as they met with an accident. The deaths of the two engineers were again overlooked by the Indian media and the cases were passed off as routine accidents.

There have been 197 reports of suicides by nuclear scientists in the last 15 years.  Some food for your thoughts?

This video is a tight slap on the faces of those who attempt to hijack incidents (even the death of a student) and give it a political spin, a tight slap on the faces of those who attempt to infuse religious, political agenda into the impressionable minds of the youth of this country, and a tight slap on the faces of those who despise the Supreme Court and the state, but ironically have to plead bail under the same judiciary system itself.

The story 15 Reasons You Need To Stop Looking For The Right Person And Instead Become One appeared first on StoryPick.

The right person.

What does being a right person mean? If you google it, “how to be the right person” you’ll probably see more articles on how to find the perfect person as compared to being one of them. That makes one wonder why are we always looking for the right person that is not us? Why don’t we become the right person instead? Shouldn’t we try to be what the one love expects instead of being a forever demanding person? Things have to give before getting.

Here are a few ways towards being the change we want to see in the others.

1. Figure yourself out before analysing others.

2. Be your own and be proud of it.

3. Accept that perfect is a myth. Perfection is perfect only with imperfections.

4. Your interest matter more than anything.

5. Keep an open mind always.

6. Realize you cannot be right all the time.

7. Be empathetic towards others.

8. Be aware of your flaws and accept them instead of blaming them.

9. Find a balance between your wants and needs.

10. Instead of being jealous, be inspired.

11. Realize the importance of personal space of others as you do for yourself.

12. Be more available, emotionally and physically.

13. Understand that a conversation doesn’t always have to be an argument.

14. Learn from your past instead of living in it.

15. Try to be more optimistic in your view of the world.

Find it within yourself instead of spreading your hands out for the chance to fulfill you.

The world-famous carbonated soft drink is labelled ‘The world’s most refreshing drink,’ and rightly so, because as of 2013, the drink is present in 200 countries and the citizens of our planet consume about 1.8 billion servings on a daily basis.

With a gamut of flavours in its army, Coca-cola is served in a wide variety of products, from soda dispensers to aluminium tins. But is it just me or have you also noticed that the Coca-Cola we drink in glass bottles or tin cans is different in taste than what we drink from plastic bottles?

We dig out the myth and the reasons behind it.

It has to do with the sugar flavouring the drink.

Even though Coke maintains that their formula for it’s standard flavour is the same across every plant and container manufacturer, many believe that the sweetener that has been added is different. In the United States, the more often used sweetener High Fructose Corn Syrup (HCFS), since corn is cheaper than sugarcane. Mexico Coke, or the coke that is bottled in Mexico, contains real cane sugar, and hence, the subtle differences in the sweetness can affect the overall taste.

Fact source

It has to do with your psychology. No, really.

coca-cola_ice_glass_splashes_5379_3840x1200

Confirmation bias suggests that your brain wants you to feel that the taste of the liquid from the different containers are different, and hence your tongue’s taste receptors are affected that way while picking up the taste. Another psychological effect that could hamper or change your perception of taste is the tactile feedback of your palms. The way your hand grips the container (whether glass bottle/tin can/plastic bottle) may also be a trigger of different tastes for the same liquid for you.

Fact source

It has to do with the material of the container.

University professors from the United States participated in a study to find out the reason behind a change in taste of Coke drunk from different containers. The results are as such: The inner chemical linings from both the aluminium cans and the plastic bottles interfere with the chemicals in the Coke syrup. The plastic bottles contain Acetaldehyde which leaks a little bit into the syrup of coke. The aluminium cans have a polymer lining which has the same effect. Glass, being the most inert substance, does not react in any way with the syrup and, hence, keeps the experience original.

Fact source

It has to do with the environment.

Coca-Cola representatives have stressed it many times over its 130 years of existence that it should be consumed chilled. And there is a reason behind this. If stored under warm conditions, the CO2 may escape from the plastic lining of the bottles, resulting in a loss of taste. Aluminium being a weak metal, warm hands can quickly warm up the drink inside, again causing a reaction due to heat, leading to a different taste. Glass bottles pretty much salvage the coolness of the refrigerator and, hence, are favourites.

Fact source

So, after careful considerations, studies, and surveys, the glass bottles come out to be winners as far as the quintessential Coca-Cola experience is concerned.

Have you noticed this change in taste?

The story 15 Crazy Facts About The Siachen Glacier That Will Make You Love Our Soldiers Even More appeared first on StoryPick.

Minus 45 degrees Celsius is not a joke.

Even when you are equipped with the best snow gear and clothes in the world. The human body simply refuses to work normally in these conditions where your body literally screams for oxygen.

But even if human bodies refuse to work normally in these harsh conditions, our soldiers with their human bodies do not. They toil on, day after day, guarding the highest battlefield with the will to protect it from the enemy.

It is more than just a hard task. You have to really think about the hardships they face every day to realize the sacrifices they make every day, even if they do not lose their lives.

1. There is no telling when the next resupply helicopter might come

Because the weather is very unpredictable and the pilots risk their lives even in the clearest of days by going to such a high altitude.

2. On bad days, there is zero visibility.

And zero means zero. You cannot even see the hand held up right in front of your eyes. This is the reason soldiers tie each other with ropes so that no one loses sight of the comrade in such blizzards.

3. And it lasts for months – literally for more than 30 consecutive days

And when it lasts for an extended period of time, resupply becomes impossible and the soldiers have to make their present supplies last until the storm clears – which could be days or weeks, who knows.

4. There are no beds for the soldiers to sleep on

Beds take up a lot of space. So the soldiers just store the supplies and use them as beds.

5. It takes 3 hours to heat up a bucket of water for a wash

They cannot have proper baths because the water will simply not remain warm long enough. They give themselves a good wash, that’s all.

And we complain if our geyser doesn’t work for one day.

6. You have to poop out in the open, and there is no saying if you might return or not

The Army has started providing soldiers with bio-toilets now, but not all bases have them. Soldiers walk in deep snow and defecate in the open.

Their biggest danger is a crevasse that is hidden under a thin layer of snow which can bury them almost instantly.

7. Isolation can drive people mad, and hence, they keep busy

The psychological effects are as bad as physical effects. On bad days, they have nothing but themselves to spend their time with. Books and makeshift games and the monotony of maintaining operational logs keeps them sane and busy.

8. Soldiers get to call home once a week for just two minutes

They are allowed one call a week for just two minutes via a satellite phone.

There have been cases where some soldiers give up their quota of two minutes to another soldier, just because he misses his loved ones more.

9. Memory loss, speech blurring, frost bites, lung infections

Just a normal day at the office for our brave soldiers.

10. 869 soldiers and officers have died as for 2015

Bullets are the last thing soldiers have to fear here.

11. Leading killer of them? Blood clots.

One-third of all the causes of deaths was because of blood clots.

The chances of a human body to develop blood clots is 100 times higher in Siachen than on sea level.

12. Each soldier carries 30 kilos of load at all times

This includes patrolling long distances every day.

13. Your sweat literally freezes and crackles between your skin and clothes

Because it is so cold, nothing stays liquid, even under 7 layers of protective clothing.

14. It takes soldiers 2-3 hours to relieve themselves and they take laxatives too

Even normal and healthy persons have it difficult to get regular bowel movements.

Each session that should normally last 10-15 minutes lasts for 3-4 hours, after taking a lot of laxatives.

Every day.

15. You can get a sunburn and a frostbite at the same times

The cold is harsh, and so is the sun. If soldiers stand outside in the sun for long, they get frostbites and sunburns at the same time.

Humans should break in these conditions, but somehow our valiant soldiers soldier on.

Why?

Because they have somehow trained their bodies that they have become superhumans?

Maybe.

But their ruggedness is beyond the physical. It is the will to protect our borders with all their strength – mental and physical, and love for their motherland.

8 Badass Things Chandra Shekhar Azad Did That Made Him A Real Hero Of India

The story 8 Badass Things Chandra Shekhar Azad Did That Made Him A Real Hero Of India appeared first on StoryPick.

Freedom fighters took two routes to fight the British rule in India during the freedom movement.

One was that of diplomacy, nonviolence, negotiations, deliberations and countless meetings between the Indian leaders and their British counterparts.

Then there was the revolutionary one where a group of young and highly motivated Indian youth wanted the British out, diplomacy and non-violence be damned.

They wanted to answer all the atrocities the British committed with equal gusto. Fire for fire. Blood for blood.

Chandra Shekhar Azad was one of them. Here are some of his famous escapades.

1. He gave himself the name Azad when he was just 15 and was given 15 lashings for it

By the time Chandra Shekhar was 15, he was a freedom revolutionary veteran. During one of these movements, he was arrested and was presented before the district magistrate.

When the district magistrate asked for his name, Chandra Shekhar proudly proclaimed his name as Azad. When asked for his father’s name he said proudly, “Swatantra”. He was sentenced to 15 lashings, which he took very enthusiastically.

2. He masterminded the famous Kakori train robbery

You cannot wage a revolutionary war without money, and after Azad joined Revolutionary Party in India, he was tasked with the looting of a train that at Kakori.

Under his leadership, 10 revolutionaries looted the train successfully, taking all the money bags that were kept in the iron safe. They held the British soldiers at gunpoint and made off with the money.

3. He crossed the Vindhya mountains and jungles on foot after escaping British clutches

The money that was looted was not a small amount, and also, it belonged to the British treasury. The British fiercely hunted down the revolutionary members and even caught 5 of them, sentencing them to death on the spot.

But Azad escaped famously. He trekked through the treacherous mountain jungles of Vindhya on foot and made it to Kanpur where he started mentoring new revolutionaries.

Bhagat Singh was one of them.

4. He also almost successfully blew up the Viceroy’s train in Delhi

He had also planned to blow up the special train in which the Viceroy was travelling.

They went ahead and planted many bombs under the tracks in Delhi. Azad personally did reconnaissance in the disguise of a sadhu.

But when the Viceroy’s train passed over the bombs, the detonation was delayed by a second and the Viceroy was saved.

5. And he escaped yet again

Imagine the surprise the police got, because they had intensified all their activities against the revolutionary freedom fighters.

This incident should not have happened.

And if this wasn’t enough, Azad again escaped!

6. He shot Saunders who was responsible for Lala Lajpat Rai’s death

We all know the story where Lala Lajpat Rai was brutally lathi charged while protesting against the Simon Commission.

Lalaji died due to the beatings and Azad swore revenge against the officer who ordered the lathi charge. Azad, with the core team members of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Jaigopal travelled all the way to Lahore to hunt down Saunders.

They shot him dead as soon as he stepped out of the police station, thus avenging Lalaji’s death.

7. And he escaped. Again.

You might think that after killing more than a few top officers of the British Government, you will be caught and given a brutal punishment.

But Azad still was as slippery as they came. Always on his guard, the British could never catch him. He was an expert of disguises and blended very well into the crowd, with help from other revolutionaries.

8. Cornered and caught, he only killed British sepoys even when his own countrymen were hellbent to kill him

Not all Indians were uber-patriotic back then. Many of them could be bought for a few rupees, and the same happened in Azad’s case.

A traitor tipped off his location to the British when he was in Allahabad. He was surrounded by 80 sepoys who fired at him mercilessly.

Azad had a pistol which he used to shoot at only British sepoys, refusing to kill the Indian sepoys who were shooting at him.

Sukhdev, who was with him, managed to escape because Azad sacrificed his life. After he knew that Sukhdev was safe, he emptied his last bullet into his own skull, thus becoming a martyr.

He didn’t want the British to have to pleasure of killing him, thus remaining a revolutionary to his death.

As he used to passionately recite his poem –

‘Dushman ki goliyon ka hum samna karenge,

Azad hee rahein hain, azad hee rahenge’

Here Is What Leonardo DiCaprio Went Through To Earn His Best Actor Oscar

The story Here Is What Leonardo DiCaprio Went Through To Earn His Best Actor Oscar appeared first on StoryPick.

So Leonardo DiCaprio finally won an Oscar. We all know he was one of the most deserving candidates, but the preparation and personal struggle he went through in preparation for his role that won him the award has been entered in the history books, to be recounted as folklore in the far future.

We delve into what DiCaprio went through for his role in The Revenant.

Getting into the skin of Hugh Glass was a tough journey.

Leonardo DiCaprio plays the role of Hugh Glass, a fur merchant who gets attacked by a grizzly bear and gets abandoned by his hunting party. He then travels across the snowy mountains to survive and exact revenge on his friends who left him to die. Even though the bear attack was CGI, DiCaprio underwent a strict and rigorous transformation to understand the mindset of a person who has to live in murderous weather conditions.

Fact source

The crew had to endure the harshest weather conditions.

The actors, including DiCaprio, had to travel and shoot in extreme weather conditions, where the temperature went to as low as -25°C in the frozen forests of Calgary, Canada. They would travel for hours just to shoot for 90 minutes because of director Alejandro González Iñárritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki’s decision to shoot only in natural light. The snow scenes were shot on an 80-day schedule because of less availability of natural light and bad weather.

Fact source

Leonardo DiCaprio, a strict vegetarian, had to eat a real bison’s raw liver.

There is a scene in the movie where Hugh Glass has to eat a wild bison’s liver to survive. When the time came to shoot the scene, DiCaprio was handed a red gelatinous pancake to pass for a bison’s liver. But it looked so unrealistic to him that he went for the real thing. His lawyers had to be contacted so that he wouldn’t get ill and the liver was inspected thoroughly before the scene so that it was checked off for no diseases.

Fact source

DiCaprio hardly talks in this movie, a new feat for him.

Leonardo DiCaprio has done a lot of movies, and in all of them, he’s talked a hell of a lot. Titanic, The Wolf of Wall Street, Shutter Island, Inception; all have seen him be a big mouth. DiCaprio said he wanted to explore the emotions and state of mind of a person who’s trapped and wants to survive, and hence, he wanted to go in a totally opposite direction as compared to his previous vocal performances. The Revenant is officially DiCaprio’s performance with the least dialogue.

Fact source

Ants had to be imported to crawl on DiCaprio. Twice!

The producers revealed after the shooting of the film that for a particular sequence, they required ants to crawl over DiCaprio. Since there were no ants present in the frozen forest of Calgary where they were shooting, they had to order ants to be flown in from Oregon and Ontario. Some ants from the first batch died during the flight, so they had to fly in another batch. Bad for the ants, Leo, and the producers!

Fact source

Leo learnt to speak two Native American languages for his role.

For his stellar performance as Hugh Glass, Leonardo DiCaprio learnt to speak two Native American languages: Pawnee and Arikara. A special linguist was hired to teach him the Arikara language. Director Iñárritu said he wanted to portray things as realistically as possible and hence Craig Falcon, cultural education consultant, was appointed as cultural advisor for the movie, for the cultural accuracy that the director was aiming for.

Fact source

This wasn’t an easy role for DiCaprio. He said that he put in rigorous amounts of hard work for it and that he’d never be able to do it again. From learning to build a fire, to studying with a doctor to learn ancient healing practices, to sitting for hours for fake scars and prosthetic makeup, Leo was the best and obviously deserving winner of the coveted Academy Award for Best Actor. 27 years, but his dedication bore fruit!

Congratulations, Leonardo DiCaprio, you God-awesome actor! 🍸

8 Ridiculous Times People Took Gods To The Court

The story 8 Ridiculous Times People Took Gods To The Court appeared first on StoryPick.

Some people have all the time in the world.

When lawyers are tired of suing each other, some get so bored, they actually go and sue a God. And you may think that they are just kidding, but no. They actually pursue the case with the vigour they should show in cases that actually matter.

What is more impressive is that our judicial system actually tolerates lawyers like these and lets them waste precious court time, as if they didn’t have millions of cases in backlog.

Here are some of the most frivolous of the lawsuits ever.

1. When Hanuman was taken to court for occupying government land

A roadside Hanuman temple was encroaching on a road in Bihar, causing traffic jams. So, the district magistrate prepared paperwork for a court summons, which was carried by a clerk to the temple.

Guess what the clerk did.

He went and stuck the court summons on Hanuman’s statue – bang on his chest.

That was probably the first time Hanuman was summoned by a court for a hearing perhaps.

The court obviously realized its mistake and termed the whole fiasco as a “clerical error”.

Fact Source

2. When Lord Rama was given legal notice for being a sexist misogynist

Chandan Singh, a Hindu himself, decided, that one fine day, after a good read of Ramayana, will sue Rama.

No, not Rama, his next door neighbor, but Rama – the god in Ramayana. The reason? Rama mistreated his wife Sita.

Yes, Mr. Singh, the whole universe was waiting for you to file a court case after so many years, just because Sita could finally get justice.

Needless to say, the court deemed the case impractical, which is a euphemism for bullshit.

Fact Source

3. When Rama and Hanuman were given court summons because they failed to reply

Two temples – one of Rama, and one of Hanuman were locked in a legal territorial dispute. The logical conclusion would have been to get the temple owners into the court and get the case settled.

But no. Apparently both Rama and Hanuman were summoned by the court and were also given legal notices when they failed to appear during the first summons.

The case is still in court.

Fact Source

4. When Ganesha was barred from trading in the stock market

A religious trust opened 6 trading accounts in the stock market under the names of 6 Gods.

Obviously, that is blasphemy and also unethical, because the Gods will always get a winning streak.

So it went to court, where the court said that the Gods are meant for worship and not to be used to gain financial wealth. But the trustees were reluctant, pointing out that the Gods even had savings accounts.

The court dismissed the case, deeming it unfit for the Gods to trade because they didn’t have the skills to do financial calculations.

Fact Source

5. When God was pulled to court for letting a man become a murderer

A murderer sued the Church for failing to keep him away from evil after he was convicted of a brutal murder.

But the Church never claimed to keep him away from evil, did it?

Not according to Pavel. He cited his baptism to be the contract under which he was to be protected from the devil. The court dismissed the case since it couldn’t find the individual to file the case against. Duh.

Fact Source

6. When the court threw out a case against god because they didn’t have God’s address

Natural disasters happen. It is the way nature works. But one US senator went ahead and filed a lawsuit against God for causing all the natural disasters and harming human life.

The court dismissed the case, saying that they didn’t have a proper address to reach God at.

Fact Source

7. When God was asked to cough up $100,000.

In 1970, a lightning struck Betty Penrose’s house and she filed a case against God for allowing that to happen. She claimed 100,000 dollars in damages.

God, obviously, didn’t turn up and Betty won the case. Against God. That’s exclusive bragging rights.

Fact Source

8. When a man sued the Devil for placing obstacles in his path

After people had finally realized that cases against Gods do not work, people started filing cases against the Devil.

Gerald Mayo was one of these people. He alleged that the Devil was causing him harm, putting obstacles in his life and was deliberately working towards making Gerald unhappy.

The court actually accepted the whole case, but they dismissed it because the US Marshals could not find anyone to serve the court notice to.

Fact Source

Some people, really, really, really need to get a life.

A creative mind can do wonders. It can squeeze out stories from the most mundane aspects of our lives and make it sound magical. But imagine the power of 5 creative minds combined together! Yes, it will ooze out novelty and exuberance in every way possible. And to see how the result would look like, Airtel India made a wonderful initiative in which a best-selling author wrote a book with 5 little kids without actually meeting them.

Amish Tripathi, wrote the first page of the story and then left it on 5 little kids, Nisha, Anshu, Arya, Anjali and Eklavya to continue it. The final compilation was published in an illustrated book called Udaan, and a 3D projection enabled people at Jaipur Literature Fest to see kids narrating the story themselves.

Amish and kids never actually met. But together they set the stage for so many young storytellers.

And then saving the seeds for a delish curry later.

2. A cup of chai and khari toast

Khari is good when dipped in chai, but equally awesome dry. The crumbs get everywhere, though.

No regrets whatsoever.

Lots of cleaning after.

To finish it keeping your table relatively clean is an accomplishment.

6. A very thick roll/shawarma

The hummus is bound to leak out of the other end.

7. Eating a juicy mango

Even if you cut it perfectly, you are bound to get some juice on you.

8. Succulent barbecue ribs

The joy is in the mess it causes.

9. The desynchronization and chaos of a meatball sub

Meatballs and sauce and bread and you do not know where to bite the sub.

10. The struggle of eating a chilli crab

They give you special tools and big napkins to deal with this dish.

11. The orange cheesy dust of cheese balls

And licking the cheese powder after.

12. Digging your face into a big ass cotton candy

And ending up with a sticky face.

13. A plate of buttered Puran poli

The sweet jaggery is everywhere.

14. A plate of delicious Ilish Maach (Bengali fish curry)

And removing the bones and thorns while eating it with joy.

And drown yourself in the rainbow of flavours. You will have to lick your fingers clean after.

Some pleasures in life are supposed to be messy.
